Dr. Ponce de Leon understands that the idea of psychiatric treatment can be a scary topic for many people. This is why she takes a collaborative approach to psychiatric care, i.e. working with patients and families to develop treatment plans instead of simply telling them what to do. While medications can be effective and necessary tools for many mental conditions, she does not believe in taking pills as a “quick fix” for problems. Instead, she recommends combining psychotherapy, medication, and lifestyle modifications in order to attain longstanding and sustainable change. Read below for more details.

Also known as ‘talk therapy’, psychotherapy is more than just “talking about problems”. There are numerous therapeutic methods that allow people to achieve goals such as processing past trauma, understanding how emotions drive behavior, or simply gaining clarity about their decisions and purpose. Dr. Ponce de Leon is trained in a variety of a methods, i.e. cognitive behavioral therapy, psychodynamic psychotherapy, and will use techniques that are best suited for your condition.

In the same way that people with diabetes take their medication to maintain their physical health, people with psychiatric conditions also take medication to maintain their mental health. Although not every psychiatric patient has to take medication, there may be times when Dr. Ponce de Leon may recommend one. At that time, she will work with you to address any concerns you may have and find the medication that works best for you. However, if the patient or parent(s) of a minor patient are uncomfortable with taking medication, Dr. Ponce de Leon will respect your decision and not prescribe medication.
-
Although it may seem silly and obvious, lifestyle modifications like exercising, eating healthier foods, and getting more sleep can actually significantly improve mental health. Dr. Ponce de Leon will work with you to identify areas of improvement and find strategies to help support your journey to mental wellness.

No, YourStory Psychiatry is a direct psychiatric care practice, which means we do not take insurance. This allows us to provide patient-focused care without the constraints of insurance. For example, we can prescribe medication without worrying about prior authorizations, can see patients for as long or as frequently as needed, or can take our time getting to know patients before settling on a diagnosis.
That being said, we recognize that many patients still want to use their insurance’s out of network benefits. Upon request, we can provide superbills that you can send to your insurance for partial or complete reimbursement.
